The village of Chenega Bay was founded in the 1700s and was the longest occupied village on Prince William Sound at the time of its destruction in the 1964 earthquake. The earthquake was immediately followed by a tidal wave that killed a third of the inhabitants.
1971 - Pursuant to the provisions of the Alaska native Claims Settlement Act, the original Chenega Bay residents received title to 70,000 acres in western Prince William Sound.
1974 - The Chenega Corporation was incorporated.
1984 - The new Village of Chenega Bay was established.
1997 - Chenega sold a portion of its lands to the state and federal government for $34 million. Part of the proceeds were used to subsidize business expansion and this has resulted in one of the fastest-growing corporations in Alaska:

- FY 05 revenues exceeded $639 million
- More than 3,150 employees work out of more than 40 states
